sheep are born with long tails, but they need to be bobbed so the sheep don't get sick from dirt as they get older. We do this by putting a special elastic on their tails at the right level, right after they are born. It hurts a little, but they get over it really quickly. And then, in a few weeks, the part of the tail below the elastic just atrophies and falls off.
