a year ago, I took a weaving course. Mom had bought a floor loom, we had all this wool, and I thought it would be fun. The course was a 2 day weekend, and was INCREDIBLY intense. There was one REALLY obnoxious woman taking it. And it was just too much crammed into two days. Plus, I was looking after the farm that weekend, which made for packed days. I enjoyed it, but I was exhausted by Sunday night, and I was not wanting to weave right away. I figured I would get to it eventually.
I have been dying wool to weave a blanket with, and last spring I decided, one Saturday, to start warping a scarf/sampler, to get used to the loom before I did the blanket. Anyway, over the course of a few days, I got the warp measured, tied on the loom, and sleyed -- which is a TONNE of work. But I wasn't sure how to tie up the treddles on the loom this is techno-babble, I know. Basically it means making the loom work right-- it was different from the one in the course where we used jack table looms, our loom is a countermarch loom, and my books really weren't helping. So I left it. For months. TOnight I kind of felt like I may like to give it a go. I did. I just tied up two treddles, for tabby, which is plain weave. Not rocket science. But I DID it! And then I wove. And it was WONDERFUL. The weaving has flaws, but it is still looking ok, and best of all, I REALLY REALLY ENJOYED IT!!
I was GIDDY afterwards -- plus, I made great progress. The loom is just WONDERFUL! It's so nice when something you learned comes back to pay off in such joy. I will definitely do more of this -- but in my time, and as the mood strikes. THere shall be no guilt involved!
