Reposted from Judith Tarr ([info]dancinghorse):

In other news, I am now officially participating in the Clarion Write-a-Thon, benefiting Clarion UCSD (the latest incarnation of "my" Clarion that I taught back along). My page is here:

I've promised to write at least 500 words a day of new fiction, one way and another. More if I can. From July 27th-August 7th. Er, go team go?

Aaaaannnnd I've sweetened the pot. Donate at least $250 in my name and you're entered in a drawing for a free weekend (well, 3 days/2 nights, any time of the week) at Camp Lipizzan. If more than one person does this, the rest will get prizes: signed books, ARC's, a signed ms. if you ask really really reallllly nicely.

I think it will be fun. meep.

If any of you have a few ducats to spare for a great cause, I would be very grateful if you'd help Judy out. In fact, anyone who sends me a receipt saying they've donated, even if it's only a dollar, will get their choice of the following:

A custom poem written by me, any style any topic

A copy of Judith Tarr's novel Lord of the Two Lands about Alexander the Great and his journey into Egypt

An LJ post of at least 500 words on the topic of your choice

A three card tarot reading

If you sponsor Judy for more than $20, I will offer signed copies of Judy's books A Wind In Cairo and Alamut in a random drawing.

Also, anyone who reposts this will get a free one card tarot reading and a pony!

This petition has been sponsored by Supporters of the David Sheldrick
Wildlife Trust; they are a solid organization, and I have sponsored an elephant with them for the past few year.

From their email:"The petition is addressed to the members
of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species
("CITES"), the organization established to regulate trade
in endangered species. In 1989, CITES imposed a total ban on trade in
elephant ivory. Tanzania and Zambia have recently requested permission
from CITES to sell their stockpiled ivory (generally consisting of ivory
seized from poachers or seized overseas, usually in the Far East). The
petition asks the members of CITES to deny this request. When CITES
authorized the sale of stockpiled ivory in 2008 by Botswana, Namibia,
South Africa and Zimbabwe, poaching of elephants and seizures of
illegal ivory increased dramatically. According to the petition, after
the 2008 sales were authorized, "poaching escalated instantly".

Please consider adding your name
to the petition to help ensure the survival of African's dwindling
elephant population and to take a stand against the sale of ivory to
satisfy the ever increasing demand in the Far East for trinkets made
from the tusks of slaughtered elephants.

This year the Vote of the Signatories to the CITES convention
will seal the fate of Africa's elephants one way or another, and
because of this all caring people have a duty to speak out forcefully,
or else become guilty of sinning through silence.
25,000 signatures are needed before March
13th. Say NO to requests to sell stockpiled ivory NOW. Your
response is urgent and appreciated.

Please click here to sign the petition:

Thank you for everything you do to help the rescued orphans.

After you take action, please spread the word to your friends!"

*warning: the image on the web site is heartbreaking, but please bear it, and sign.

I haven't verified this, but it comes from a fairly savvy source, and I think it is worth reposting:

If anyone is on twitter, set your location to Tehran and your time zone to GMT +3.30... Iranian security forces are hunting for bloggers using location/timezone searches. The more people at this location, the more of a logjam it creates for forces trying to shut Iranians' access to the internet down. Cut & paste & pass it on

I heard part of an Idea's broadcast on How to Think About Science last night. They were talking to Evelyn Fox Keller, who had some really interesting ideas about how the language we use actually affects the science we do, and then made some interesting connections with Gender.

The program (just shy of an hour long) is available as a podcast here, along with the other episodes in the series, many of which sound very interesting.

You can also learn about the series, and stream most of the episodes directly from the ideas website.

I just talked to [ profile] kerlin Tris is doing ok. He still hasn't passed any manure, but his bloodwork came back without any real red flags- it shows high glucose, elevated muscle enzymes and slightly low blood counts, but that just shows he is fighting somethiing. There is, most importantly, no evidence of organ damage.

He's not out of the woods yet, but things are looking up.

Thanks for all the vibes -- if you could send "please poop tris" vibes, that would be great.

[ profile] kerlin's horse Tristan is in crisis. He's been showing colicky symptoms since last night, but it's not colic. They THINK it might be some form of toxicity, but the vets are at a loss for the moment. They are doing tests to find out more, and providing supportive care, but she is exhausted and worried and she and Tris could use all the vibes you guys have.

Thanks -- and could those of you who have more flist folks in common please cross post this.
