So as some of you may know, the interior of British Columbia is tinder dry and there are a number of serious forest fires not far from where I live. In fact, as of tonight, there are 353 fires burning in the province of BC (25 new ones in the last 24 hours), and a province wide state of emergency has been declared. The province -esp the southern half -- is tinder dry, with no precip for 41 days -- and none is expected soon. It is hot and dry, and there are VERY dangerous winds. It is scary sh*t.
My parents and I live in a rural area, surrounded by trees etc. There was a small bush fire near here 4 years ago (water bombers and everything), and it was NOT fun. We were safe, but it got our attention. SO with current conditions, we are making contingency plans for ourselves and our animals. Not fun to think about, but really important.
My uncle was evacuated as a result of the fire right near Kamloops. His house is safe, for now, but the fire was within 60 feet. And my uncle was driving away when fire retardent was dropped on his truck as a water bomber flew by to protect the homes. ICK!
On a positive note, Mom and I went on a great Back Country HOrseman ride today, and DAd came to the BBQ (don't worry -- we used a VERY closely monitored propane bbq) after. It was a very fun day. But we are all exhausted. There is lots of smoke in the air, and it is hot, and we have been busy since six am. But it was a great day! And the chinese food is enroute. . .
Please keep all the evacuees in your thoughts and prayers. And any rain you could send our way would be appreciated. I can't remember it ever being this bad in 30 years.
ETA: Oh ya -- also, we were without the internet for 24 hours because one of the fires burned a crucial line or something that fubar'd the ISP. Oh the fun!

Date: 2003-08-03 03:17 am (UTC)Yeah, the sitch in the Puget sound region is not as bad, but still scary. Ft Lewis had two fires which they got put out fairly quickly, but they are only 5 miles from my house. I know the interior of WA is in much worse shape. I didn't realize that BC was in such bad shape though.
*does raindance for a week solid of nice gently rain* cuz otherwise the rain will just run off
Stay safe.

Date: 2003-08-03 04:10 am (UTC)I'm thinking of you (particularly every hour on the hour, when the latest scary report comes on CBC). All of you stay safe, OK?
sheesh. we have more rain than we know what to do with out here...
Hi!
Date: 2003-08-05 05:40 pm (UTC)What a beautiful grey TWH. I must say, they are one of my favorite breeds. :)
Your parents belong to Backcountry Horsemen, do you or they belong to Oregon Equestrian Trails (OET)? (I belong to OET.)

Re: Hi!
Date: 2003-08-06 04:20 pm (UTC)actually, the grey is my little Arab -- and she is a sweetie. The black in the icon I am using for this post IS a walker, however. And we have two others. I agree - they are a GREAT breed. I do hate what some of the show set do to them, though. Ours are strictly flatshod!
What breed is your baby?
As for Backcountry Horseman -- I am actually the member. I keep trying to convince Mom and Dad to join, but Mom only just got a horse she is comfortable trail riding on this spring, so this weekend was her first ride. I'll get her on board soon though! I am a member of Backcountry Horsemen of BC , Okanagan Chapter. And though I would love to ride in Oregon someday, I haven't ever done so.
Anyway, nice to meet you, and see you around these parts more often!
Oh heck, I feel like an airhead...
Date: 2003-08-06 04:44 pm (UTC)My first icon was my Crabbet Arabian who I had to put down last July. He went into anaphylactic shock from a bee sting. :(
This icon is my new cremello quarter horse filly (yearling). I am beginning to see that some things (even heartwrenching ones) happen for a reason... I have always wanted a cremello but never would have gotten one if my gelding hadn't died (only have room for one horse) AND I have discovered that a person's heart has room to love a LOT of different horses.
She doesn't replace my gelding, but I can't say I love her any less than I loved him.
