So, I am headed back to Calgary this weekend to work on the Sooper Seekrit Horsey Project.

And I need to take my saddle. I am flying.

Do any of you have any experience/suggestions for packing a dressage saddle for a flight?

I travelled with a hunt seat saddle on board once - put it in a big square drawstring bag I'd made (and braided cotton cord handles and stitched those on.) It worked great and fit under the seat in front of me.

huh. I actually hadn't thought of carrying it on. Though I worry a dressage saddle might be too big. hmmm. *thinks*

The tree fit under the seat with no problem. I had to curl the side panels(?) (what the stirrup leathers hang against) under the tree.

ETA: I carried the saddle over my arm, the way one normally does. The panels were curled only while it was under the seat.

I went and saw my tack shop ladies, who are knowledgeable and lovely. H said that they used to let you carry them on, but don't allow it anymore. *sigh*

she suggested a box and gave me foam wrap for the saddle....
